We had a wonderful welcome to Sadler’s Wells Theatre as there is a plaque of John Cranko and a sculpture of his chair standing right in the entrance of the stage door along with sculptures of other famous choreographers. Cranko made many of his first ballets here before he came to Stuttgart and it is heartwarming to know that he is not forgotten! The text accompanying the plaque says it all. As Reid Anderson always says: “No matter where we go in the world, we find the Stuttgart Ballet!”

After exploring the theater to find our way around and a stage rehearsal in the evening there was a tiny bit of time to see London by night. The city is gearing up for the holiday season!

On the photo you see our head of the technical crew Axel Schob and his deputy Cemile Soylu as well as lighting master Stefan Seyrich during the technical set up and load in on Sunday. As always they are working hard to make everything perfect for the show.

We have now completed the first half of our tour with two performances of Made in Germany behind us.

Last night’s performance was in many ways special: Robert Robinson was heartily – and loudly – cheered by his family and friends who had come in great numbers to see him dance Marco Goecke’s Äffi.
The “M” section of Cranko’s Initials brought a collective sigh from the audience as Maria Eichwald and Evan McKie gave a superb and soulful rendering of this pas de deux and the corps danced with perfect unison, not only of steps but also of feeling.
Sue Jin Kang and Marijn Rademaker danced the final pas de deux of Lady of the Camellias as if their lives depended on it and Alicia Amatriain and Jason Reilly brought cheers and gasps of wonder (in both Grand Pas de Deux as well as Mono Lisa!) from an entire class of ballet students who had obviously been brought by their teacher to watch the company.

On Monday night many dancers from the Royal Ballet were to be seen in the audience – including Ivan Putrov, Federico Bonelli and Edward Watson – and on Tuesday evening Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, attended and stopped by backstage to speak to our dancers, many of whom she knows from the international gala circuit.
Several members of the Stuttart Ballet family have also come by, among other former Principal Dancer Wolfgang Stollwitzer and Klaus Göldenbot, former Chairman of the John Cranko Society.

Today the technicians are building up the sets for Taming of the Shrew and the company is rehearsing all three casts which will dance on the weekend!

Last night was our only free evening in London which many dancers used for sightseeing.

Today we are continuing rehearsals for Taming of the Shrew and this evening we have our first rehearsal with the orchestra!

This tour to London is the first time I am on tour with the Stuttgart Ballet. I’m feeling really good and it’s a lot of fun.

Of course, on tour you spend much more time together than in Stuttgart and so you get to know your colleagues from the other departments and also the dancers a little better, this intense contact creates a wonderful sense of community.
The english colleagues here at the theatre are very friendly, and they also work together with us in a very professional way. What I find exciting are the cross-national similarities in our workflows.
All the set changes have worked out really well until now.

There hasn’t been too much time to discover London, but fortunately my mini-sightseeing-tour was accompanied by sunshine.
