Dear Stuttgart,

Today will be my first performance with the Korean National Ballet in John Cranko’s Taming of the Shrew! The last two weeks have been great fun with lots of hard work. I miss all my friends in Stuttgart but with the help of Sue Jin Kang and Filip Barankiewicz I feel as if I am at home.  I hope to have a lot of fun tonight with my partner Ji Young Kim who has been fantastic to work with! I am excited to return home, enjoy a good Schnitzel and am looking forward to my Stuttgart debut Petrucchio on July 21st! Until then I hope everyone is well and happy!!

With Love,

Dear friends and fans in Stuttgart,

I am writing to you from Seoul, where I am at the moment rehearsing La Bayadere with the Korean National Ballet, which will be performed next week. Although I have danced in La Bayadere before, this will be the first time I am dancing the role of Prince Solor in Korea and I am looking very much forward to be dancing in Yuri Grigorovich’s version of La Bayadere on the huge stage in Seoul.

I really enjoy being here: I’m working everyday with Sue Jin so it’s a bit home away from home and we have a great time together. It is also wonderful to be working with her dancers, my partner Eun-Won Lee and the rest of the company: The corps de ballet girls as shadows in the third act are phenomenal, so together and precise very inspiring.

Tomorrow I have my first run through and the performances will be on March 30th and April 4th.

Wish me luck!

Yours, Friedemann

KOREA // NOVEMBER 2015 (Day 6)

Dear friends!

Sunday was a very emotional day for Sue Jin Kang and her Korean fans as well as for the Stuttgart Ballet … After a career of almost 30 years – all of it as a dancer with the Stuttgart Ballet – she gave her Korean farewell performance. (Her very last performance will be in Stuttgart in July 2016, during the celebrations for Reid Anderson’s 20th season as Director.)

Sue Jin, who does not appear onstage with her own company, the Korean National Ballet, chose to give her Korean farewell performance with her “home” company and asked for Jason Reilly as her partner. Both danced three performances of Onegin in a row, the last being of course the most intense.

Here are some impressions of our last days in the the theater, culminating with the farewell performance.
